Standing at the podium
He stood so tall and proud His smile spread across his face And his voice boomed bold and loud The jets flew ‘cross the sky The rain began to pour He started to tell stories Of the Revolutionary War. But there was something new I’d never heard before History now revised Of long gone days of yore. Fort McHenry’s rockets Were from a different war And “our Army manned the air”? Oh wait, but there is more! “It took over the airports” But planes had yet to be. It seems our brilliant President Should retake History. At a recent rally, Trump began to reflect upon the Revolutionary War and how we "took over the airports" as well as referencing Fort McHenry's rockets, which were from a different war. (Revolutionary war was in 1775....airplanes invented in 1903). https://time.com/5620936/donald-trump-revolutionary-war-airports/

Just ‘cuz he’s president
Doesn’t make him smart It’s really rather evident He’s missing some spare parts Incompetent, Incapable, Inept Commander in “Cheif” Our country is in trouble Dear lord, my god, good greif! Trump continues to misspell words--even his own title, "Commander in Cheif". https://www.independent.ie/world-news/and-finally/trump-mocked-for-misspelling-chief-in-tweet-about-his-negotiating-skills-38053449.html It’s too much work
To read the briefs It hurts my head I think instead… I’ll watch Fox News. https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/364094-trump-watches-at-least-four-hours-of-tv-per-day-report I wake up every morning
And listen to the news Discovering which words Trump continues to misuse. His favorite seems to be Council vs counsel. Will he get it right today? It really is quite doubtful. And even poor Melania He spelled her name wrong too. Melanie is close enough When you clearly have no clue. And now that Scott is free And Twitter is in tatters. “No challenge is to great” Except for proper English grammar. Unpresidented Unprecedented Who really knows the difference? When everything from out his mouth Is 100% pure gibberish. Incompetent in writing. Incoherent in his speech. But Trump will be remembered For creating “lasting peach.” https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-typos-spelling-tweets-unpresidented-2017-4#no-challenge-is-to-great-7 We’ve created our own hell
People live it every day As weapons maim and murder Our compassion’s gone astray. Empathy abolished Humanity denied Benevolence’s been beaten Our morals are revised. Extremism ignited Within various religions. Preaching death to others And making it their mission. No longer can we tolerate This horrid lack of judgment Their actions are disgusting Vile and repugnant. We have the strength within us We need only use our words Show kindness in our actions And speak so we’ll be heard. Read to understand Share what you have learned Hold out your hands to others Critical thinking must return. Question what you think is true And learn about new things Freedom in your knowledge Find purpose in your wings. Nepotism, Narcissism, Cronyism. Plutocracy, Hypocrisy. Corporatocracy. Kleptocracy. Destruction, Obstruction, Collusion. Oligarchy, Anarchy, Malarkey. Covfefe? Trump’s grammar in his speeches is at a 6th grade level, and is “very, very good…the best.” However, his presidency has brought forth a plethora of new vocabulary words into the media. I wanted to write a poem highlighting this interesting juxtaposition of literacy and illiteracy.
As I read the book, “The Age of American Unreason” Susan Jacoby spoke about Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essay, “The American Scholar” (aka: “Man Thinking”). I began to research the essay and was truly inspired. One year after giving this speech Emerson cut his ties with organized religion when he spoke to the Harvard Divinity School’s faculty basically saying that it is only through an individual’s soul search for truth and not through church teachings that one will find salvation. Emerson’s insight
Into the mind of man Came at the perfect time As America began Use our country as a muse Create a life of change History, science, poetry All thoughts we should exchange He calls upon the scholars To use their intellect Their desire for education They never should neglect In nature you’ll find wisdom And in science search for facts With the right books one will learn From our world’s historical acts. Always seek ideas, An individualized truth, Because our country’s future Begins within our youth. Rational thought and knowledge Should guide us politically Because nothing in the world can stop A man thinking critically |
